Fall is my favorite time of year. There is something about the 60 degree Chicago temps and the warmth of a fresh apple pie that bring me such joy. Visiting our favorite Apple Orchard up in the Wisconsin Countryside is a favorite tradition for my family.
In preparation, we head to our local library to check out all of our favorite Apple Themed Books. These books are geared toward preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade children, however, my 2nd grade students loved these just the same. 1. Apples by Gail Gibbons
Gail Gibbons is a long time favorite as a teacher and a mom. Her ability to write non-fiction content in a way that is relatable to young children is so valuable. This book shares the history of apples, parts of apples, and the lifecycle of an apple tree. The illustrations will engage young readers and spark an interest in this deliciously sweet fruit.
2. Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie by Herman Parish
Anyone else grow up on Amelia Bedelia books? This modern version of this beloved character will bring lots of laughs to young readers as Amelia confuses Granny Smith for a real person.
3. One Green Apple by Eve Bunting
Eve Bunting is another favorite author in this beautiful story of friendship and inclusion. A special book that doesn’t necessarily focus on apples but on the importance of working together and honoring the diversity within your classroom.
4. Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins
You can do so much with this book. The simple illustrations are appealing to children. The rhyme sequences and counting components are a useful in connecting to your Fall Literacy and Math content. This book pairs nicely with these Apple Ten Frames.
5. Apple Pie ABC by Alison Murray
Your students will love the little puppy in this story. The author uses the alphabet to tell the story of a special apple pie and the lengths in which the pup goes to snag a bite. This would be a fun mentor text when creating your own alphabet books with your students.
6. One Red Apple by Harriet Ziefert
This non-fiction book uses beautiful illustrations and simple text to tell the story of what happens to an apple from the moment it is picked. Pair this book with your lesson on the life cycle of an apple.
7. The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons
This book focuses on what happens to a young boy’s apple tree throughout the seasons. There are bonus text features such as an Apple Pie Recipe that make this book stand out.
8. Apples, Apples, Apples by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace
This cute story follows a little bunny family as they learn about apples. This book even includes a recipe for apple sauce, which would be a science activity to complete with your little learners.
9. Up, Up, Up, It's Apple Picking Time by Jody Fickes Shaprio
If you have a fieldtrip to an apple orchard, this is a great book to read before your trip! Follow along with Myles and his family as they pick apples at his grandparents' apple orchard.
10. Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell
This is the perfect book for Fall because it combines apples and pumpkins together. The little girl experiences both traditions of an apple orchard and a pumpkin patch to celebrate this time of year.
